Professor of Human-Computer Interaction

Télécom Paris is recruiting a Professor in Human-Computer Interaction.
The successful candidate will lead technical HCI research and is expected to develop and reinforce the team’s leadership in this area and to contribute to the team’s multidisciplinary focus. Candidates should have a track record of high-quality publications in HCI and/or related fields.
This is an open call in all areas of technical HCI and related disciplines. Candidates who are experts in other areas of HCI or Visualization may also be considered, depending on their track record. About the Research Group
Research activities will be conducted in the DIVA (Design, Interaction, Visualisation & Applications) group of the Computer Science & Networking department. The group research activities focus on novel interaction techniques (particularly with respect to large and small-scale devices), VR/AR/XR, information visualisation, digital fabrication & design, and new technologies for teaching.
The candidate will also work in collaboration with faculty in the design, psychology/ergonomics, 3D graphics, and multimedia groups of the LTCI and CNRS I3 research laboratories of Télécom Paris and the broader Institut Polytechnique de Paris community.

Candidate Requirements
- Candidates must have their HDR (or equivalent experience for international candidates) in Computer Science, HCI, or equivalent.
- International candidates with an equivalent proven track record of research supervision may also apply.
- Candidates who do not currently have their Habilitation to Direct Research but will defend it shortly may also be considered. Such candidates are encouraged to make contact before applying.
- French is not required, but candidates must be willing to learn.
Academic Rank
The proposed position is a full-time, permanent position (with tenure, “CDI de droit publique”). The successful candidate will obtain the rank of Professor.
Activities
- Research
- Conduct and lead research in Human-Computer Interaction.
- Research activities will take place in the Computer Science & Networking (INFRES) department in the DIVA (Design, Interaction, Visualisation & Applications) group.
- Teaching
- Contribute to the teaching needs of the different degree programs of the school (equivalent to bachelors, masters) and continuing education, in particular in the following fields:
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Information Visualization
- Programming (e.g., Java, C/C++, Web) and software development
- Participate in the supervision of Ph.D. students and the supervision of student projects and internships.
- Direct individual classes or teaching programs.
- Participate in the FabLab.
- Influence
- Maintain a significant publication activity.
- Present research work in different journals, conferences, and seminars.
- Participate in scholarly societies.
- Create or organize conferences and seminars.
- Miscellaneous Responsibilities
- Participate in and contribute to the scientific activity of the department and research group.
- Direct and supervise, as appropriate, any agents placed under your responsibility or supervision.
Skills :
Required education or experience:
- HDR (Habilitation à diriger la recherche) or equivalent level of international experience, or
- (In French) Fonctionnaire appartenant à un corps recruté par la voie de l’Ecole Polytechnique ou de l’ENA ou ancien élève de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure avec expérience professionnelle ≥ 3 ans, or
- (In French) Diplôme d’une Ecole d’ingénieurs ou de commerce et de gestion ou équivalent avec expérience professionnelle ≥ 5 ans, or
- Any Bac + 5 degree (e.g., M2) or equivalent with ≥ 5 years of professional experience, or
- High level executive with ≥ 8 years of professional experience.
Required skills, knowledge, and experience:
- Deep theoretical and practical knowledge in computer science, in particular human-computer interaction.
- Experience in university-level teaching and research.
- The ability to work in a team, including communication and writing.
- Relational and teaching skills. Ability to synthesize understanding.
- Mastery of English both written and orally (teaching and publishing)
- French: non French-speakers will be expected to achieve a professional level of French within a reasonable period
Desirable skills, knowledge, and experience:
- Experimental methods and validation (quantitative and/or qualitative)
- Interactive data visualisation, 3D interfaces, immersive visualisation, etc.
- UI Programming, toolkits, and paradigms
- Digital fabrication
- Design
- Multimodal interaction, gestural or tactile/haptic interaction
- Mobile interaction, connected objects, wearable computing
Hiring Process
- Selected candidates may be invited to give an informal research talk (in-person or remote)
- Talks may be scheduled during the open call period and given before the formal auditions. Applicants are thus encouraged to apply before the closing deadline.
- Application deadline: May 5, 2025.
- Formal auditions will be held on June 11, 2025.
- All selected candidates will auditioned on the same day.
- Auditioned candidates will be ranked immediately following auditions; rankings will be communicated to candidates.
- Candidates are expected to start in calendar year 2025.
